Vose Lab Team Vose Research Lab Alicia K. Vose Ph.D. Lab Principal Investigator Dr. Alicia Vose is an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the Department of Neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, FL, and an investigator in the Breathing Research and Therapeutics (BREATHE) Center at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Dr. Vose earned her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at The George Washington University and spent six years as a clinician in acute care and ICU settings at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Driven to advance therapeutic approaches, she pursued a PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Florida, supported by an NIH T-32 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in the BREATHE Training Program, where she gained specialized training in swallowing neurophysiology and rehabilitation. In 2019, Dr. Vose began a postdoctoral fellowship in respiratory physiology and neuroplasticity, working within a translational research collaboration between the University of Florida and Brooks Rehabilitation. Under the mentorship of Dr. Gordon Mitchell (basic neuroscientist) and Dr. Emily Fox (clinical scientist), she investigated novel therapeutic interventions, such as acute intermittent hypoxia, to improve outcomes in breathing and airway protection for individuals with chronic spinal cord injury. Dr. Vose’s research program aims to enhance motor recovery and rehabilitation strategies for individuals with neurologic injuries. Her lab focuses on uncovering the mechanisms of airway protection, including swallowing, cough function, and respiratory-swallow coordination in populations affected by spinal cord injury, stroke, and ALS. With over a decade of clinical experience diagnosing and managing swallowing disorders, particularly in neurologic injury contexts, Dr. Vose is committed to developing innovative rehabilitation strategies that harness synaptic plasticity to support functional recovery.
