Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU)

Patients receive expert care in the Neurocritical Care Unit at UF Health Jacksonville. Our team of specialists are highly trained in the diagnosis and management of complex neurological conditions. With years of experience and a generous dose of compassion, our care teams guide patients and their families along the road to recovery.

Neurocritical Care Unit: Multidisciplinary approach

Our approach is to provide care with multidisciplinary teams that include neurocritical care physicians, neurosurgeons, advanced practice providers, highly trained nurses, case managers, as well as occupational, speech and physical therapists. We know from experience that these skilled specialists make a difference in patient outcomes. Medical research provides further evidence that patients cared for in specialized neurological critical care units have shorter hospital stays and enhanced neurologic recovery. As part of our patient-centered focus, we also provide support services for family members during what can be a stressful time.

  • Acute ischemic stroke
  • Anoxic brain injury

NCCU invites residents from various specialties

Kimberly McPhearson, DO, assistant professor in the department of neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, directs UF Health Jacksonville’s Neurocritical Care Unit. She welcomes residents from neurology as well as those from internal medicine, anesthesia, emergency medicine or other specialties, as there are several different pathways to neurocritical care. McPhearson appreciates the unique perspective that non-neurologists bring to the unit and invites them to train at the NCCU to expand their knowledge and expertise.
